Sowing and Growing Carrots

carrots21

You can virtually have carrots all year long if you sow new seeds regularly throughout the sowing season.

You can freeze your carrots for those out-of-season times, but as with most vegetables, fresh  is best.

Below you will find details of sowing and growing your carrots.

SOWING

The main sowing season for your carrots is April to early July. However, if sowing in a protected environmemt it is possible to sow as early as February / March time.

SOWING INSTRUCTIONS

Deep: Carrot seeds should be planted 13mm (0.5 inch) into the soil
Spacing:
Carrot seeds should be sown 5-7cm (2-3 inches) apart
Rows: Rows of carrot seeds should be around 15cm (6 inches) apart

GROWING

Ensure that you keep the area weed free, as weeds will takeover from the carrot seeds if allowed to.

Keep the soil moist will help maintain healthy plants and prevent splitting.

Be gentle when thinning out your plants. Bruises (the smell given off by bruised carrots to be precise) attracts rootfly which will ruin your crop.

HARVESTING

Pick your carrots as soon as they are large enough to use. If necessary use a garden fork if the soil happens to be heavy. Enjoy!
